Description: This brick was made at Prestongrange during the tenure of the Prestongrange Coal and Iron Company or its successor the Prestongrange Coal and Firebrick Company. A controlling interest in both companies was held by consortia of Middlesbrough businessmen. This is a fireclay brick, predominantly pale yellow in colour variously speckled with metallic inclusions. It has a single rectangular frog (recess) lettered PG with decorative 'stars'. Found on the foreshore at Morisons Haven, all edges have been eroded. Bricks were made at Prestongrange from the early nineteenth century. After 1872 the works were expanded and progressively mechanised and switched to using shale (blaes) and fireclay from the nearby colliery. Two short lived companies operated the works between 1872 and 1893. Accession Number - 1996.321.26
