Burgess Board from Haddington Parish Church

Description: This board records the donation of a sum of money to be used to alleviate the plight of poor people in the town of Haddington. The board is one of a set once displayed in Haddington Parish Church; the Kirk Session had a role in administering such grants. Black painted panel of two boards secured in a wood frame. It is painted with gold text reading: GIVEN FOR GEORG COCKBURN ELDER LATE BAYLI OF HADINGTOUN AND MARY EDGAR HIS SPOUSE 60 POUND HE DYED IN IANUARY 1698 AGED YEARS AND SHE IN AUGUST 1696 AGED. This board was erected to the memory of a married couple who were amongst the elite of Haddington. The husband had been a bailie, a title used by senior councillors who were also magistrates (or judges) in the burgh court. Bailies were elected from the body of the council by balloting councillors.
