Description: Handbells like this were used to gain the attention of children as a school day began and throughout the day at lesson changes. Traditionally, the ringing of the bell was a signal for classes to assemble in the playground before an orderly entry to their classroom. This bell was used at North Berwick. This is a wood handled copper alloy handbell. At some point it has been retuned - there is a circular hole in the side and a slot above the bell. The clapper is a brass ball cast onto a hooked iron rod. Accession Number - 1996.465
